In the two meanings of the word. I read this book for book club and was ready to enjoy it, as some members were enthusiastic about it. Unfortunately the Sunday Telegraph's ‘Sex and horses: who could ask for more?’ line is deceptive. I ask for more: for a writer who would seem to like at least *one* of her characters, for some coherence in even *one* character's actions or psychology. A believable, decent ending (do your research for symptoms and treatments... before the Internet, there were libraries, or one could ask a MD.) As for the sex parts, this book has aged (+ personally not turned on by descriptions of penises looking like *salamis*, of all things). Not sure about the horse parts, but in this book, they jump alone in shows whenever the rider is not up to it, which is often... The only reason I give two stars instead of one is that I find the writing good, I liked the author's witty style.Product details

Riders (Audible Audio Edition) Jilly Cooper Gerri Halligan Whole Story Audiobooks Books Reviews
I was far too busy reading 'serious' books at school to get into the Jolly Cooper novels. So glad all that is behind me + I can knuckle down to the fun side of a reading list. Paces storyline, lovely images of rural England + characters you want to hiss + cheer for!
I'll admit, I struggled through the first 35% of this book, but man was it worth it. You really get to know the characters and because of that their stories become so much more interesting. I'll admit that the end felt a bit rushed, but was still satisfying. I'll definitely read this again.
I bought this copy of Riders as a gift for my vet. I've always loved this book, it's rich and colorful characters and my vet enjoyed it as much as I did
A lot more sex than in the true horse world but a very good story of which I have read twice now, once the paperback and now on
. A lot of horses and the true feelings involved as well as the heart break that is also a part of the equine life. Show jumpers and the extreme care involved in keeping them going as well as the amount of giving up of other things in order to have good horses. If you want to feel a part of the horse show world and the people involved read Riders.
This book is much better than Cooper's "Players," mostly because it has a plot and some hysterical scenes (designed to appeal to the reader's inner seventh grader). But it's basically every young adult horse book I've read, only with a terrifically horny English cast and an author who's allowed to use bad words and bad metaphors when it comes to writing sex scenes.
Here are some very familiar characters to anyone who's ever read horse lit.
Rich snobs who are outrageously nasty and get their come uppance - Check.
Spunky, sassy young horse mad girls - who are basically National Velvet with a sex drive to rival certain species of rodent. - Check.
Poor but gifted young trainer with a long festering grudge - Check.
Throw in vapid assorted other characters, and you've got a book!
Also, why does this author have such an obsession about making sure we know a character is overweight - to the point of using "fat" and its synonyms for pages on end? Just asking.
I first read this book 30 odd years ago, I loved it then and I love it now! What a world Jilly Cooper weaves, you want to move in! The best kind of fiction, can't wait to read it each day, stay up too late reading it and sad when it ends! She captures a moment in time with humor and feeling and insight. If you lived in England during the 70's, you know what I mean. Just love this story. Always have, always will! Thank you Jilly for the laugh out loud moments, the tears and the horses. Brilliant.
NPR rated this on one of their random book recommendation lists. This one was a list of books for horse lovers, which I definitely am. I used to do show-jumping so was excited to read something based on the international show jumping circuit. The horse knowledge was superficial and anthropomorphized (though the characters' obsession with horses was certainly authentic). The "smut" parts were kind of meh and got a little old. Could have been a good 100 pages shorter. I found myself bored half way through but wanting to see it through and then annoyed that it was so long.
